The university is a research university that is public and located in ann arbor, Michigan. The university was founded in the year 1817 as the University of Michigan, 20 years before the territory even became a state. The university is the oldest one in the whole of Michigan. The university was moved to the location of ann arbor in the year 1837. After moving to ann arbor, the campus includes 584 different buildings and covers an area of 780 acres. The University of Michigan is the founding member of the American universities.

History of the university

The University of Michigan was established in Detroit on August 26, 1817, about 203 years ago, as the Catholepistemiad, or the University of Michigania, by the governor and judges of Michigan Territory. Judge Augustus B. Woodward specifically invited The Rev. John Monteith and Father Gabriel Richard, a Catholic priest, to establish the institution. Monteith became its very first president and even held seven of the professorships under him. Richard was its very first vice president and held the other six professorships under him. Concurrently, Ann Arbor had set aside 40 acres (16 ha) in the hopes of being selected as the state capital.
