After failing to make weight at the UFC 274 weigh-ins on Friday, Charles Oliveira will be stripped of his lightweight title. He entered the weight class with an extra half-pound on his frame, making Oliveira an underdog in a lightweight title fight. Since the title is now vacant, only Justin Gaethje can win it on Saturday night if they fight.
As per sources, Oliveira was set to defend his title for the second time. Only five minutes remained in the initial weigh-in period when Oliveira arrived at the scales for the first time. As the commissioner yelled out the weight he had missed, he looked bewildered. He was given an extra hour to lose weight, but when he returned, he had already missed it once.
The UFC stated that Oliveira’s title would be stripped “upon the start of the main event headliner” in a statement. Denver-based Gaethje (23-3) competed at 155 pounds and has previously held the title of interim champion. In 2020, he put up a fight against undisputed champion Khabib Nurmagomedov but lost. Nurmagomedov fought one last time before calling it a career. 115-pound champion Rose Namajunas (11-4) and Carla Esparza (18-6) both made the cut.
Rematch of UFC strawweight title fight in 2014 between these two fighters for their respective belts. In the first meeting, Esparza was able to win by default. She is currently riding a three-fight winning streak as a two-time UFC champion. They could steal some of the limelight away from the main and co-main events, like Michael Chandler (22-7) or Tony Ferguson (25-6). Both made weight, and both are desperately in need of a victory.
After a close fight with Oliveira last year, Chandler was denied the UFC title. In November, he was defeated by Gaethje in a match that quickly became a classic. As if that wasn’t enough, Donald Cerrone (36-16) and Joe Lauzon (28-15) both made their first appearances in 2019 at 155.5 pounds. A half-pound short of the featherweight limit, Norma Dumont also failed to make the cut.
However, she was fined 30 percent of her purse, and her fight against Macy Chiasson is not over yet.
