Microsoft Surface Duo, also known as Surface Duo, is a foldable device released during the Microsoft Surface Hardware Conference on October 2, 2019. It was officially released on September 10, 2020. The device was released with Microsoft Surface Neo. Unlike previous Microsoft products that run internal operating systems (such as the recently discontinued Windows 10 Mobile), Surface Duo runs Android. The device is usually considered a smartphone, but Microsoft itself does not want to use the term to describe the device, instead of calling it the “newest member of the Surface series.” It is also called a phablet. The device comes with Android version 10. It will be updated with monthly bug fixes and standard Android security updates. Microsoft has not yet communicated the pace of feature updates. Many applications are pre-installed on the device.
Microsoft’s Surface Duo has been criticized for offering outdated specifications (and other bugs) at top prices, but this may not be the case for the sequel. Windows Central shared a Tech Rat leak claiming to display an image of Surface Duo 2, which shows that Microsoft is dragging its dual-screen Android phone into the modern era. Most notably, the rear camera with three sensors has an eye-catching bump-you don’t have to use one camera for everything. WC knows that these are standard, telephoto, and ultra-wide triggers. The leak also showed that the Surface Duo 2 was displayed in a more concealed black and that Microsoft had removed the fingerprint reader from its original position and moved it to the power button.
The two displays or internal structures are barely visible, although WC and previous leaks indicate that modern hardware is in desperate need of a leap. According to reports, Microsoft will equip Surface Duo 2 with Snapdragon 888 chip, 5G, and NFC. In other words, I no longer use words that were obviously missed a year ago. WC claims that Microsoft will release Duo 2 sometime in September or October. Not sure what the price is, but Microsoft reduced the original price from US$1,399 to US$999 a few months after the release. At the time of writing this article, it was priced at US$650. The company is well aware that the high price of the first Surface Duo scared away potential buyers and may not want to make such a mistake again.
